Word Ladder

About & Contact

A small place for a good word puzzle.

One word, one small change

Word Ladder brings a classic word puzzle straight to your browser. Start with a four-letter English word, change one letter at a time, and find your way to the target. Our focus is a clear place to play, with helpful feedback when a step does not fit.

We built this game for this website. Its rules, hints, and word checks run in your browser. The accepted-word list comes from ENABLE2K, created by Alan Beale and Mendel Cooper and made available in the public domain. We use the word list preserved by Bart Massey, with a smaller, carefully selected set of familiar words for puzzles and hints. The website is built on the licensed ShipAny Two template.

A reason to return

Daily selects the same puzzle for everyone on a given date, changing at midnight in New York time (America/New_York). Practice lets you play more puzzles from the selected collection. These are separate modes, so taking a practice break does not replace your daily progress. Puzzles come from a fixed, reviewed collection; there is no daily word-list crawl.

Once you finish, you can share a score and a link to the same puzzle. The generated text contains counts and a date or puzzle ID, without the words or solution. Shared links let friends try the same challenge; scores are not verified by a server or entered in a public leaderboard.

Your ladders, hint counts, and completed games can be saved on this device so you can return to them in the same browser. There is no account or cloud sync. Older saved puzzles may be removed to keep storage bounded.
